Zcash Co-Founder Proposes Ending $125M Grants Funding Stream

Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe has proposed ending the automatic allocation of 8% of Zcash block subsidies to the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) program, redirecting the remaining funds to the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM).The draft proposal, published on October 26, argues that ZCG has accumulated enough resources to continue funding projects without receiving a share of every block subsidy. It estimates that the program’s existing holdings, after outstanding grant liabilities, could be worth $125.3 million at an assumed ZEC price of $1,300.Bowe’s proposal would change the destination of future funding rather than take money away from existing grants. ZCG would retain its treasury and continue making awards from its accumulated resources, while the remaining 8% allocation would go to the NSM for the rest of the funding stream’s existing term. The proposal comes as Zcash attracts renewed attention from investors and users of privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. The network recorded 62,375 shielded transactions in the week ending September 24, its highest weekly count since 2022.

ZCG Holds Millions in Reserves

The draft ZIP cites a ZCG dashboard that reported 91,452.98 ZEC, $8.8 million in USD holdings and $2.42 million in outstanding grant liabilities. Based on those figures, Bowe estimates the value of the program’s holdings after liabilities at $125.3 million if ZEC trades at $1,300. The estimate falls to $97.8 million at $1,000 per ZEC and $52.1 million at $500. These valuations exclude future funding stream receipts, meaning the figures represent the program’s existing resources rather than its projected balance if the current allocation continues.Bowe also compares the reserves with ZCG’s reported spending. The Financial Privacy Foundation reported $1.53 million in ZCG expenses for the first quarter of 2026, equivalent to an annualised $6.12 million. At an illustrative annual spending level of $10 million, the proposal estimates that the existing reserves could cover about 12.5 years of spending at $1,300 per ZEC or 5.2 years at $500.The current allocation provides another reason for the proposed change. Under the draft’s calculations, the 8% share amounts to 52,560 ZEC annually. At $1,300 per coin, that would represent approximately $68.3 million a year, more than eleven times ZCG’s annualised first-quarter expenses. Zcash has also attracted private investment for development. In March, the Zcash Open Development Lab secured $25 million in seed funding from investors including Paradigm, a16z crypto, Winklevoss Capital and Coinbase Ventures.

Investor Takeaway

Zcash Community Grants holds an estimated $125.3 million after liabilities at a ZEC price of $1,300, while its annualised first-quarter expenses stand at $6.12 million.

Future Funding Would Go to Network Sustainability

The proposal would redirect the remaining 8% allocation to the Network Sustainability Mechanism through the funding stream’s existing expiry. The mechanism’s own specification would govern how it subsequently handles the funds.Bowe’s draft would leave ZCG’s existing assets and the rules governing them unchanged. It would also preserve the separate 12% allocation to the Coinholder-Controlled Fund, maintaining that funding channel while ending the automatic subsidy payments to ZCG once the proposed changes take effect. The draft does not propose changing Zcash’s maximum supply, invalidating historical blocks or altering existing transaction formats. It also states that the redirection would not change the network’s transparent or shielded transaction privacy properties.ZEC has attracted growing interest from traditional investment markets. Grayscale converted its Zcash Trust into the ZCSH spot exchange-traded fund on NYSE Arca on August 25. The fund surpassed $500 million in assets under management within two weeks of its launch. The cryptocurrency traded above $1,600 in late September, up from roughly $50 a year earlier, while Dash also advanced amid renewed interest in privacy-focused assets. ZEC breaks above descending resistance as buying pressure grows, with the chart pointing to a potential move toward $1,368. Source: TradingView.ZEC could extend its bullish move in the near term, according to its chart structure. The asset has broken above a descending resistance line and rebounded from the lower end of its support zone. If buying pressure continues, ZEC could climb toward $1,368, based on the chart’s projected price target. The Accumulation/Distribution indicator also points to growing buying pressure, with the market recording a weighted volume reading of 37.19 million. However, further price gains would depend on sustained accumulation and continued buying activity.

Investor Takeaway

Bowe proposes redirecting future grants funding to network sustainability. Meanwhile, ZEC could reach $1,368 after breaking descending resistance, with a 37.19 million weighted volume reading pointing to buying pressure. Further gains depend on sustained accumulation.
