The regulator says paid search ads are directing investors to articles about four B.C. issuers and stresses that it is not alleging the companies authorized or knew about the promotions.
The British Columbia Securities Commission has warned investors about a coordinated international effort using news-style articles to promote stocks. The regulator said the material may form part of a market-manipulation or pump-and-dump scheme, but it did not accuse the four named issuers or their executives of involvement. The BCSC said sponsored Google search results direct readers to articles about B.C. reporting issuers on a network of websites. Four advertising firms based in the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Panama and Slovakia were identified in the Google Ads Transparency Center as verified advertisers for campaigns connected to the content. The regulator said the articles appear in a news format and are surrounded by other material that may be AI-generated, making the sites look more like independent publishers.
